less is more – right?

19 Nov

With the holidays quickly approaching, I find myself  sleeping less & spending more. Reading less & worrying more.  So, with that in mind, I decided to start where it matters most – in my closet!

Less chocolate means more chips

Less day-light hours means more time to snuggle in bed

Less good tv programming means more monopoly with the boys

Less tasty restaurants means more sploshy red wine dinner parties

Less shopping means more …um, working on this one….

Have any you’d like to add??

Keep or Swap Wednesday

17 Nov

ok, I am designating Wednesdays to keep or swap. I think I am stealing this game from my friend Angela, who calls it Unsure Wednesdays – but I am also pretty sure she will not mind.

So, opinions and feedback matter. I don’t cry (easily) so ALL feedback welcome. As long as they don’t involve the words  fat, unflattering, horse or weightwatchers…

What I would like to know is : Do I keep this amazing SteveMadden jacket I just received in the mail from a fellow swapper, or do I re-post?  Thanks tons fro your help, and feedback

shiny happy swappers

17 Nov

I was cleaning up  earlier (hard drive, not the kitchen…gggrrr)  and I came upon photos of some friends in their swapped threads.

happy swappper

happy swapper

happy swapper

Once again, I was happily reminded that suzieswapper really does rock.  And has the ability to really make people happy!

happy much?

I needed that today- recently my universe has expanded and is being filled with tons of new amazing women, each with their own stories, memories histories. And with these, I am exposing myself to their lives, some filled with joy & happiness, but just as many equally filled with turmoil, death, sadness, heartache. And I suck at sadness, really & truly. It can fill me up, stuffing itself into every pore, leaving nothing left of me: no mom, wife, friend. So, believe me, you’ll like me better happy. And luckily it takes so very very little to do so. In fact, in case you are wondering, I have put together a very condensed version of things that make me happy (feel free to pass along to the Christmakah fairy):

Lipgloss that lasts (ideas anyone?)

lipgloss that lasts. for longer than 3 minutes

Sploshy red wine dinner parties with friends

sploshy redwine

Casually using words like sploshy, wonky, ubiquitous

Clothes. Shoes. Headbands

New girl crush, Gwyneth Paltrow (I’m quite sure she actually winks at me in this video)

Freshly washed sheets

Anything *apple

no, not this kinda apple...

So, it is light and inconsequential, this I know. But sometimes that’s what the day calls for.  What would you have on your list?

Style – ishly back on track

14 Nov

Ok, so to be honest suzieswapper has sucked sweetly for the last few months (ok, I was gonna insert different word there but loved the alliteration) . I appreciate your patience while I went MIA.

The short explanation is that recently I have met all these incredibly talented women on Twitter and then later IRL (um, in real life) at a very cool Social Media conference held in Toronto,  BlissdomCanada. They are businesswomen, bloggers, entrepreneurs, artists, scholars, brand evangelists, photographers, etc. And I wanted to be just like them. But – lucky for you, I discovered – I am not.  So I came home from this conference and tried to write a post. Then another, and another. I even tried drinking, and for those who know me, understand how that turned out: cheeks that burst into flames (thanks Rosaescea), loud jerky movements, lame unfinished jokes, then  ending in lovely hangover  – but absolutely no untapped hidden writing powers.

So today,  headachy and grumpy I epiphanized (more on that word in a bit) that I am what I am – simply a girl who likes pretty/casual/fancy/comfy/vintage/stylish  clothes – and wants to share that with all of you.  So – without further ado, let me introduce myself as your newly launched Clothing Liaison.

Here’s the thing about this epiphany of mine: I realized after so many failed attempt at writing this, that you could care less about my writing skills. I could make up expressions and words regularly (ask my husband, I do!) and still it would not matter.  I will leave all the clever blogs to all the clever people, I am not one of you. I get to dedicate this blog to fun happy stylish clothing. And another AMAZING thing I realized (you won’t wanna miss this, really!!):

I like shopping. Alot.

The kind where I get to walk into the store and touch and smell and taste (no judging!!) NEW clothes.  I really do. That’s what got me into this fine mess in the first place. I don’t think we have to swap our entire wardrobes.

I am not fanatical – I’ll leave that to the vegans & Habs fans.

After much deliberation – and a bit of time at the mall the other day – I realized that I would like to collaborate with retailers, not work against them. I have come to the realization, that if I can save a hundred bucks by swapping a winter coat (which I ‘ve done) then I have no problem (ok, less of a problem) walking into Roots for a new bag. Or walking into Sephora for some lipgloss. Or getting an amazing facial (did that too!).

What a flippin relief: I get to make as many spelling/grammatical  erors errors as I like, I get to shop guilt-free, I get to hang out with all of you – but mainly I still get to enjoy swapping clothes with all of you!  so, join me on Facebook . You have to admit: It’s pretty….savvy!!

#bekind & share shoes

9 Nov

A few weeks ago, I joined Twitter because a friend told me to. She is really smart and talented so I listened.  She thought it would be a great way to promote suzieswapper and gain new members. I am sure it is and will be.  But the thing is, I am having so much fun just chatting and meeting new people, I keep forgetting to promote my FREE online clothing swap (phew, done).  Fellow twitterers tell me this is actually a good thing, that using twitter is about more than advertising and self promotion. In fact, these are minor players compared to all that  be gained in this twitterverse.  And after just a few short weeks, I tend to agree.

OK – I have won prizes ( I LOVE free things. I guess that’s why I run  a FREE online clothing Swap for women (yes, that’s 2).  I have discovered BlissdomCanada, possibly the best conference I have ever attended (um, I used to work in the financial industry so this says very little. But still…). I have made new buddies, some of which – oddly – feel more genuine than others I have had for years.

But most importantly, I am now collaborating an incredible new project with an equally incredible lady.

Who will KILL me if say anymore.  Which is fine because dinner (ok, really just leftover pizza) is in the oven and I really must go for now.  But take a minute and watch this video.

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own.
And you know what you know. You are the guy who’ll decide where to go.”

A must read before BlissdomCanada

18 Oct

Years ago there was a FB page circulating.  When you received it, you were invited to  write 25 random facts about yourself. At the end, you pass it along to others and invite them to read it and create one of their own.  I barely remember writing it but I  accidentally came across it tonight.  It felt like finding an old diary entry (blushing furiously and eyes were bleeding).  Some of what I wrote was just crap, some thoughtful but mainly just regular “me” stuff.

Which got me thinking about transparency.  I recently joined Twitter (and yes, for the record – I am embarrassingly hooked).  So far, I am loving the experience – it suits my ADD-tendencies and need for speed just fine.  Everyone I chat with seems to drink about as much wine & coffee as I do!  And yet –  we don’t *really* know one another.  We just get to present whatever image we want in a sense. On twitter I hold a Phd in literature & paleontology and wear a size 4 . BUT – in a few weeks I am attending BlissdomCanada in Toronto and will be meeting a lot of these women for the first time.  I can wear heels and spanx, but I ain’t never gonna be a size 4 IRL (Twitter speak for In RealLife).  So I have decided to re-print my questionnaire and hope that it gives you all a chance to forgive me in advance for all of my lies (In the interest of boredom, I have edited this version first)

As much as I love reading about myself ( and I really really do, I swear!!) I am curious about all of you! Feel free to create your own list here in the comments.  I promise not to yawn!

2. I have contemplated botox and a boob job but remain undecided

4. I have also deliberately added some completely untrue statments but only a very few of you will know which ones are honest and true.

5. At the risk of losing my husband, I will not include irony in these statements.

6. I could have been married to a rock star, a politician, a chef, an athlete, an academic and I would still be married to the same husband/Patrick.

7.The above point is absolutely not one of the untrue selections.

8.I once laughed soooo hard, I peed my pants. And instead of remembering this with shame, I can’t wait for it to happen again.

9. As a kid, I really truly believed that, just as we watched the “little people” living inside the television, there were even bigger people watching us. Going to the bathroom was sometimes difficult.

10. I read way too much and way too fast. I’m just not always sure about the quality of the literature.

11. Fitness and health became really important to me a few years ago (as a teemager, i remember my friend May and I smoking during gym class, while the rest of the class were out jogging the block)

12. I am also very lazy about fitness and healthy living and pledge to improve

13. There are certain words I will never use. Healthful is one of them. Pasifistic is another.

14. I sometimes want to grow my hair really really long and dye it blond.

15. I am not forgetting to mention things about my boys but they are too private, and treasured, to share.

16. I am neurotic at times. Many many times.

19. I am discovering this is an impossible task without sounding pretty pretentious.

21. I wish I kept in better touch with some old friends.

22. I wish I lived closer to my mom

23. I hate my elbows

24. Years ago, on a date with Patrick, a complete stranger complimented me on my beautiful complexion. To this day, Patrick remembers this, and whenever I mention my losing battle with roseacea, he tells me that is completely untrue, and that even complete strangers notice my peachy skin. The compliment is now 14 years old.

24. I used to have tons of freckles on my cheeks and nose that have all just merged into one.

25. This was more fun than I thought it would be. Burn after Reading.

Happiness Consultant!

10 Oct

Don’t be hating on me cause I  make people happy …that’s what I was thinking when I read this blog earlier tonight (The actual words may have been ” Why does this girl say mean things and swear so much”, but I am taking liberties and making me sound waaay cooler – in fact, I may even have resembled  The Girl with The Dragon Tatoo chic when I said it).

Initially I thought the blog suggested that simply by airing our disappointment, women were shitting on one another or on themselves.  At first I took offense.  She was oh so close but personally, I prefer to get pissed with other women and talk about shit…ok, fine – occasionally I have been known to even take a shit while talking to  other women but see – I am still not actually doing any of this shitting on other women (ok, once in college but we were just experimenting…)

And then there was the shift when I realized that she wasn’t describing me anyhow – how could she be when we’ve never even met? Because though many of you may not know this  I am way more of aTanya, Happiness Consultant kinda gal (yes – even the wonky haircut).  Except without a Ray.  Just some really nice clothes that make women happy.

I get to spend my days help women dress better save money & improve the environment all in one fell swoop! And –   thanks to not being invited to ShesConnected (this time around), now I get to plan a party with some really new cool friends too! I want all to have a fantabulous night and really enjoy ourselves. So because I love to share the happiness: For anyone not able to attend #SCCTO  -for any reason at all – feel free to join our quickly growing #SoConnected twitter party!  Hope to see you there!!

p.s. Fro those wondering, I suspect cocktail Deeva & I will be bffs within a month and spend our time together coming up with wys to improve a black russian!!
